LAIKA is a US-based animation studio founded by ex-Disney animators. It was the first stop-motion studio in the world to produce a feature length animated film. LAIKA’s award winning films include ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, and Kubo and the Two Strings, all of which have been nominated for Oscars. In 2015 LAIKA opened The Felt Mistress Toy Factory in Portland Oregon. This is its only retail store to date and features artwork from LAIKA’s productions as well as other work from independent artists all done using felt materials. As of 2016 LAIKA is the only stop-motion animation studio in the US. It has also been an inspiration to local artists and animators in Portland Oregon, many of whom work in the film industry and who continue to carry on this tradition. The Felt Mistress Toy Factory was opened by LAIKA’s owner and CEO, Travis Knight in 2015. Knight is also CEO of Laika Entertainment and is known for producing one of the first feature length stop motion animated films: Coraline (2009).  After its opening, The Felt Mistress retail store was managed by an independent Portland company called Kinzel. In March 2018, Laika Entertainment began a partnership with Kinzel to take over operations of The Felt Mistress Toy Factory.  Some historians have called the film itself, "LAIKA's first cult movie". It seems to have inspired a lot of people to enter the art of stop motion animation. This was the first stop motion animated film completed by LAIKA originally released on Netflix in 2012. ["Paranorman" (2012))} also won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. The studio's next feature, "The Boxtrolls" (2014) was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film as well as receiving nominations at BAFTA and Sundance Film festivals. In 2015, the studio released "Kubo and the Two Strings" which was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at both BAFTA and SVA. In 2016 LAIKA reached a licensing agreement with the musician Damon Albarn to adapt his film "Dracula Untold" as a stop motion animated feature. In 2017, Travis Knight is developing "Mulan", a Chinese opera told from the perspective of Mulan. As part of this project, Laika has been working with Ming-Na Wen from "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." as well as Monkey King Wukong from Disney/Marvel Studios' "Kung Fu Panda 3". The studio has also signed a contract to produce "Gibson" with Annapurna Pictures. The main office for LAIKA is located in Hillsboro, Oregon. It is there that the actual stop motion animation process takes place. The facility includes animation cameras, computers, and editing software for post production purposes.UNPREDICTABLE ART WORLD PANEL DISCUSSION WITH SHERRY PASTORE AND LAIKA FILMMAKERS  - https://www.artsjournal. cfa1e77820
